Our History
After COVID-19 shelved plans for a 2021 conference, the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, Institute of Caribbean Studies, Equality for All Foundation/J-FLAG, and 360 Artists are proud to be relaunching Beyond Homophobia in 2024. This conference builds on the success of the very first symposium in 2015 and two subsequent biennial conferences, Centring LGBTQ Experiences in the Caribbean in 2017 and Navigating the State in 2019. Beyond Homophobia continues the exploration of the ways in which Caribbean sexualities, gender identities and queer practices are expressed and experienced beyond the discourse of violence, and stereotypes, assumptions and limitations presented by heterosexual and binary gender norms.
